macao et cosmage
edy legrand
One of the most important books in the history of children's book illustration. Extremely Rare

Edy Legrand, Illustrator
Macao et Cosmage ou L'Experience de Bonheur
.
Paris: Aux Editions de la Nouvelle Revue Francaise,(1919) Square folio, original pictorial boards colored by pochoir. 54 pp.
Macao et Cosmage was written and illustrated in 1919 by Edy Legrand who was 18 years old. The book is is one of the most significant volumes of the century, representing a significan break from the romantic styles of Edmund Dulac, Arthur Rackham and Kay Nielsen. It was a large square book (12 X 12) brilliantly colored by hand in the stencil "pochoir" process reflective of the Jazz Fauve movement. The minimal text was written by hand.
Macao et Cosmage broke also from the book-binding practices of the early century. Unlike the heavy art productions of Hodder and Stoughton (England) and Scribners (USA) with delicate tipped-in plates, carefully bound and printedon fine paper, leGrand's book was big, bold, rough and inexpensive. Pristine copies of Rackham and Dulac abound today. It is nearly impossible to find even a very good copy of Macao et Cosmage.

Voyages et Glorieuses Decouvertes Des Grands Navigateurs

Paris Tolmer 1921. 1st. Folio. (11x15.25 in; ) Cloth-backed paper boards. Pictorial endpapers at front. Exceptional colored pochoir plates by Edy Legrand. Two folding maps as well as 54 illustrations ???doubles and singles with textual inserts as well. The stenciling is remarkable, the colors jump off the page. It was LeGrand's earlier book, Macao et Cosmage (1919) done when the artist was only 18 years old, that set children's book illustration on a new course. LeGrand is one of the most important illustrators of this century. This book, in good condition, is quite rare. The boards on this copy are rubbed at the bottom. Apart from that the book is FINE in all respects. Bookseller Inventory #532
