This is the 12 volume set first introduced in 1937 with each of the original thicker (less child-friendly) volumes being made more picture-book-like and easier for a child to handle. The style of illustration and text were changed as well from the original 1920-21 edition. Fair only. 2nd Edition. This is the more common 2nd edition, in green simulated leather. As will be seen innthe iamge to the left, the front joint is torn and the spine separated. Repairs have been made to several pages at the front of the book in order to hold them in. Remarkably there are no gutter tears, the most common problem with this first edition. In fact there are no torn pages at all. The books does show its age, however and some browning to pages. Inventory # 7648 Price $40.00

This set is less perfect than the one above but still, as these books go, a very good set. All volumes are tight in their bindings. All endpapers are clean and hinges sound. Cover illustrations (see image to the left) are slightly scratched. Spine ends bumped. Volume I: pages 107-108 with an old tape repair now yellowed. About ten small closed page tears near spine. Volume II: Page 53 with an old tape repair, now yellowed. 9 or 10 small closed tears near spine. Volume III: no damage. Volume IV: no damage. Volume V: no damage. Volume VI: no damage.
