

TALES TOLD IN HOLLAND: 1926. Illustrated by Maud and Miska Petersham. From the foreword: “TALES TOLD IN HOLLAND consists chiefly of stories with a few translations from the greatest Dutch poets and a few old Dutch nursery rhymes, náive and nonsensical as our English rhymes, and contrasting interestingly with the far more sophisticated rhymes in French.” This volume cover is red. There is a map of Holland on the very last page. Endpapers show hardworking Dutch country folk and wll dressed aristocrats. The pattern of the doll house window is sun faded into the fabric of the back cover. The spine is also slightly faded.
LITTLE PICTURES OF JAPAN: 1925: Illustrated by Katharine Sturges: from the foreword: “Friends of Moon and Winds – so were the Japanese poets called who wrote the tiny poems that comprise the greater part of this book….With the inner rhythm of feeling, not necessarily the outward rhythm sound of the hokku poets, in these little gem-like verses, sing the wordless song of the universe.: This volume is bound in deep purple cloth boards. The end papers depict a flight of graceful cranes on a red background with a butterly and lotus blossom in the foreground.
NURSERY FRIENDS FROM FRANCE: 1927: Illustrated by Maud & Miska Petersham: from the foreword: “These little chansons, which take the place of nursery rhymes in France, have been beloved by generations of French children, for most of them are at least a hundred years old.” This volume has light blue cloth boards. The pattern of the windows of the dollhouse is faded lightly into the back cover, the spine is slightly faded. The endpapers show a map of France.
The six volume of MY BOOKHOUSE are in washed green cloth boards with past down illustrations and raised lettering on the front cover, gilt lettering on the spine, illustrated end papers, gilt top page edges. All show slight wear on heels of spines and bumped lower corners. Volumes 1,2 and 3 have rippling from age in the paste downs on the covers. The books measure 9 x 7 inches, have 448 pages each.
Volume 1 – IN THE NURSERY: 1925, has names printed on the front page + date. Two interior pages have corners torn off – but not into the print. There is an Old Christmas gift sticker on the front illustration, about 2” long x 1” wide. There is a tiny ridge in the ripple in the paste down and the head of the spine is slightly torn.
Volume 2 – UP ONE PAIR OF STAIRS: title page has a closed tear about 2/3 of the way to the bottom. Child’s name on the front page. No other writing, marks or damage.
Volume 3 – THROUGH FAIRY HALLS: 1928, Paste down is slightly rippled, no marks, tears or writing.
Volume 4 – THE TREASURE CHEST: 1928, no marks, writing or damage. Paste down looks almost new.
Volume 5 – FROM THE TOWER WINDOW: 1921, Smudge inside front cover, no other marks, no writing, no damage. Past down looks almost new.
Volume 6 – THE LATCH KEY: 1925, Soiling of lower page corners, paste down illustration looks almost new, no writing, marks or damage to the book.
These books are as originally packaged: a nine volume set in a book case shaped like a wooden house. The house is gray with a red roof and red trim around the bottom edges. “MY BOOKHOUSE” is painted in an arc over the windows on each side of the house. Some of the top layer of wook has chipped off. The chips have been preserved in a baggie and could be re glued. There is a warp of the top layer of wood on the left side, but that can be repaired also. From bottom to chimney top, the house measures 22 inches high and 12 inches wide and 10½ inches deep.
