"
It may interest the public to know that the illustrations for Birdland are the work of two boys, twin brothers, now fifteen years of age. I do not mention the age of these young artists by way of apology, but rather by way of interest, for the work presented is remarkable enough for artists of maturer years. In the Autumn of 1897 some half-a-doxen bird drawings by M. and E. Detmold were shewn to Mr J.M. Dent, and he was so struck with their merit that he commissioned the two brothers to complete a book for him with coloured illustrations. The first idea was to bring out an Alphabet of Birds, but eventually "Pictures from Birdland" was chosen as a title, and thus a wider scope of subject was permissible" (Preface). "Dent was so struck with the merit of the Detmolds' work that he commissioned them also to complete a book of colored illustrations. This book, Pictures from Birdland, published in 1899, is remarkable in many ways. Particularly noticeable are the early influences in the paintings, Edward's design for an osprey, with its unusual water effects, testifying to a Japanese contribution. Already apparent is that style in which a searching study of natural forms, especially bird plumage, is subordinated to decorative arrangement" (David Larkin, The Fantastic Creatures of Edward Julius Detmold)
